A board foot is a box of volume hiding inside a board

Picture a block of wood 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. That is one board foot, or 144 cubic inches. The board can be long and narrow, short and thick, or shaped differently; if the wood volume is the same, the board footage is the same.

Volume, not surface area

A square foot tells you how much flat surface a panel covers. A board foot tells you how much wood volume is present, so thickness must be included.

A board 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 24 inches long is one board foot. So is a board 2 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 12 inches long. The proportions changed; the volume did not.

Board feet are especially useful for hardwood because boards are commonly sold in varying widths and thicknesses. The unit gives buyers and sellers one volume basis without pretending every board came from the tree in identical rectangles.

If thickness is missing from the calculation, you are measuring area, not board feet. Thickness is the part that keeps the square foot from wandering into the lumber tally wearing a fake mustache.

How to calculate board feet yourself

When thickness and width are in inches and length is in feet:

Board feet = thickness × width × length ÷ 12

If every dimension is in inches:

Board feet = thickness × width × length ÷ 144

Worked example, four boards at 1 inch by 8 inches by 8 feet

Per board = 1 × 8 × 8 ÷ 12 = 5.3333 board feet Four boards = 5.3333 × 4 = 21.3333 board feet With 10% allowance = 21.3333 × 1.10 = 23.4667 board feet

Do not round each board too early unless that is the agreed tally method. Small rounding on many boards can become a noticeable difference in the final invoice.

A very fast check

A 1 inch by 12 inch board contains one board foot for every foot of length. An 8 foot board at that size must equal 8 board feet.

Actual, nominal, rough, and quarter thickness are not interchangeable

Hardwood thickness is often described in quarters of an inch before surfacing. Four quarter, written 4/4, is nominally 1 inch rough. Five quarter is 1 1/4 inches, six quarter is 1 1/2 inches, and eight quarter is 2 inches.

After drying and surfacing, the board is thinner. A 4/4 board may finish near 13/16 inch or 3/4 inch, but the exact result depends on the supplier, rough condition, flattening required, and the finished specification.

Use the dimensions employed by the seller when checking a purchase tally. Use the actual or expected finished dimensions when calculating project volume, finished weight, or yield.

The thickness preset fills the traditional rough quarter value. It does not claim that the board in front of you is exactly that thick.

Nominal size is a category; actual size is a measurement

Both are useful, but only when you know which question you are answering.

The arithmetic and the invoice need the same rules

Tally methods, rounding, and price can change the purchase total

A lumber tally is the recorded quantity used for sale. Suppliers may use exact dimensions, nominal thickness categories, average width, rounded lengths, minimum board footage, or specific rounding rules. Ask how the tally is made before comparing your calculation with the invoice.

The calculator keeps the exact raw volume, adds the selected waste allowance, then optionally rounds the planned purchase upward. That last rounding is a planning choice, not a universal lumber rule.

When a price is entered, the calculator applies it to the rounded planned purchase amount. This shows the cost of what you plan to buy, not only the ideal wood remaining in the finished parts.

Large quantities are often written as MBF, meaning one thousand board feet. In the lumber yard, MBF is not a computer file size, although both can become expensive when someone misreads the abbreviation.

Compare the same basis

A lower price per board foot may not be a better deal if the stock requires more surfacing, contains more defects, or is tallied by a less favorable method.

Purchased volume and usable yield are different numbers

Waste depends on the boards and the parts, not one magic percentage

Waste allowance covers material that will not become finished parts. That may include end checks, knots, splits, sapwood restrictions, wane, twist, cup, bow, planer loss, saw kerf, color matching, grain direction, and the empty spaces left by the cut layout.

Ten percent can be reasonable for simple parts cut from clear, straight, surfaced stock. Rough lumber, wide matched panels, curved pieces, short clear cuttings, figured grain, or strict color selection may require far more.

The shape of the project matters. A rectangular tabletop can use broad areas efficiently. Curved chair parts may leave large regions between the cut lines even when the board itself is defect free.

Waste is not the same as careless work

Some material must be rejected or positioned deliberately to achieve strength, appearance, movement allowance, or matching. Good planning makes that loss visible before the boards are purchased.

A board can be measured; a log must be predicted

Direct lumber volume is not the same as a log rule estimate

Sawn rectangular lumber can be measured directly with the board foot formula. A log is round, tapered, covered in bark, and loses wood to slabs, edging, defects, and saw kerf. Its future board yield must be estimated.

Foresters and mills use log rules such as Doyle, Scribner, and International quarter inch. These rules can produce different board foot estimates from the same log, especially at smaller diameters, because they make different assumptions about saw kerf and usable yield.

This calculator is for measured lumber or rectangular stock. It does not estimate the number of board feet hidden inside a standing tree or log.

A board foot in a finished lumber tally is direct volume. A board foot in a log scale is predicted lumber yield under a particular rule.

Board measure made varied lumber easier to compare and sell

North American lumber commerce needed a practical way to compare boards of different widths, thicknesses, and lengths. Reducing each piece to an equivalent 144 cubic inch unit made tallies and prices easier to combine.

The unit remains common in hardwood and timber markets, while construction lumber is often sold by the piece. Metric markets may use cubic meters, but the board foot persists because an established trade language can outlive several generations of measuring equipment.

One board foot equals 1/12 cubic foot, about 2.3597 liters, and exactly 144 cubic inches under the modern inch definition. Twelve board feet make one cubic foot.

A board foot says nothing about species or weight. One board foot of balsa and one board foot of dense hardwood occupy the same volume but do not volunteer for the same lifting assignment.

Any shape can contain one board foot

The familiar 1 by 12 by 12 block is only a picture of the unit. A long narrow strip, thick turning blank, or collection of smaller pieces can contain the same 144 cubic inches.

Practical buying and project checks

  • Confirm whether the supplier tallies rough, surfaced, nominal, or actual dimensions.
  • Measure enough boards to understand width, thickness, taper, and length variation.
  • Separate raw project volume from the added waste allowance.
  • Plan around knots, end checks, wane, grain direction, and color before choosing a waste percentage.
  • Keep a cut list with finished dimensions and required rough allowances.
  • Check whether price applies to exact tally, rounded tally, minimum quantity, or a bundled pack.
  • Use the lumber weight calculator when transport, racks, handling, or shipping matter.
  • Recheck expensive figured, matched, or unusually wide stock before milling begins.

Board footage is a volume estimate, not a guarantee of clear yield. Two stacks with identical board footage can produce very different numbers of usable parts.

Do one cube check

If the result is 12 board feet, the total solid volume must be one cubic foot. That conversion is an easy independent check on the calculation.
