Volume is simple until someone brings three different gallons
Volume tells you how much three dimensional space something occupies or can hold. It covers liquids, boxes, tanks, concrete, soil, air, lumber, grain, and an alarming collection of barrels that refuse to be the same size. I’ll show you how to convert the units, how to calculate common volumes yourself, and where real containers stop behaving like perfect geometry.
First, fill the middle container
The converter uses liters as the common reference
For ordinary volume units, this converter changes the starting value into liters, then divides by the number of liters in the target unit. A liter is exactly one cubic decimeter, which is also exactly 1,000 cubic centimeters.
When volume comes from length, the conversion factor must be cubed. One foot is 12 inches, so one cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12, or 1,728 cubic inches.

Converting 5 US gallons into liters
One US liquid gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 liters. Multiply the gallon amount by that factor.
Worked example
5 US gal × 3.785411784 = 18.92705892 L18.92705892 L × 1,000 = 18,927.05892 mLTo go back, divide by 3.785411784.
For a quick estimate, multiply US gallons by about 3.8. Five gallons becomes about 19 liters, which is close enough for a mental check. Random thought: why did the bicycle fall over? Because it was two tired. Anyway, back to containers.
Three words enter a bucket
Volume, capacity, and displacement describe related but different ideas
Volume is the space occupied by an object or region. Capacity is how much a container can hold. Displacement is the volume of fluid pushed aside by an immersed object.
A tank’s outside dimensions give outside volume, not inside capacity. Wall thickness, rounded corners, internal baffles, fittings, and required headspace all reduce usable capacity. A “20 gallon” shop vacuum or air compressor tank may also be a nominal product size rather than a promise that every last cubic inch is usable in the way you imagine.
An object that is fully submerged displaces a volume of liquid equal to the object’s submerged volume. That is useful for irregular objects, provided the object does not absorb the liquid, trap air, dissolve, or object to being dunked.
Never trust a gallon without asking where it lives
US liquid and Imperial gallons share a name, not a size
A US liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, or 3.785411784 liters. It contains 4 US liquid quarts, 8 US liquid pints, 16 US cups, or 128 US fluid ounces.
An Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters. It contains 4 Imperial quarts, 8 Imperial pints, or 160 Imperial fluid ounces. The Imperial fluid ounce is smaller than the US fluid ounce, but the Imperial gallon is larger because it contains more of them.

If a recipe, fuel figure, or old specification says only “gallon,” the missing system can create an error of about 20 percent. That is not a rounding problem. That is a whole extra argument in the container.
A cup of flour is not a cup of certainty
Dry volume depends on how the material fills the space
The United States has separate liquid and dry capacity families. A US dry pint, dry quart, and dry gallon are larger than the liquid units with the same names. The US bushel is a dry measure equal to 4 pecks, 32 dry quarts, or about 35.2391 liters.
Volume is convenient for liquids, but loose solids can pack differently. Flour can settle, brown sugar can be packed, gravel contains voids, and grain test weight describes mass per standardized bushel rather than changing the bushel’s volume.
A fluid ounce is volume. An ordinary ounce is mass. Water makes the two seem temptingly related in some kitchen situations, but other liquids and ingredients have different densities. Converting cups to ounces by weight requires the ingredient’s density, not just a volume converter.
Modern measuring spoons are standardized within a system, but household spoons are serving utensils, not measuring instruments. The tablespoon also differs between countries, so serious formulas should name the system or use milliliters.

Cubic feet, cubic yards, and board feet answer different project questions
One cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches and about 28.3168 liters. One cubic yard equals exactly 27 cubic feet and is common for concrete, soil, mulch, and aggregate.
A board foot is a lumber volume of 144 cubic inches, traditionally pictured as a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. It is a volume unit, not a piece count and not necessarily the board’s finished dimensions.

The barrel has never met a standard it could not complicate
Oil barrels, beer barrels, hogsheads, and acre feet belong to different trades
A US petroleum barrel is 42 US gallons. A US beer barrel is 31 US gallons. A hogshead in the convention used by this converter is 63 US gallons. The container in front of you may not physically hold the named trade volume; “barrel” often survives as an accounting unit.
An acre foot is the volume needed to cover one acre of land to a depth of one foot. It equals exactly 43,560 cubic feet and about 325,851 US gallons. Water agencies use it because it connects stored water to land and depth in one visual unit.
It is one twelfth of an acre foot, roughly 27,154 US gallons. A small looking depth spread over a large area becomes a very large volume.
Even the liter had an awkward phase
The liter was not always exactly one cubic decimeter
Today, one liter is exactly one cubic decimeter. In 1901, however, the liter was defined using the volume occupied by one kilogram of water under specified conditions. That definition made the liter slightly larger than a cubic decimeter, about 1.000028 dm³.
In 1964, the old definition was abolished and the liter returned to being a special name for exactly one cubic decimeter. The difference was tiny, but it matters when reading high precision historical measurements from that period.

Not always. Usable capacity can be lower because of wall thickness, headspace, fittings, slope, internal equipment, and the level at which the container can safely operate.
