The calculation is simple in principle, but only after the shape, units, and density all agree. Most spectacular errors begin with one of those three quietly living in a different system.

Equal size does not mean equal mass
Density is mass divided by volume
Density = mass ÷ volumeMass = density × volumeA cubic inch of copper contains more mass than a cubic inch of aluminum. Using the representative values in this calculator, copper is a little more than three times as dense as aluminum.
One broad material name can hide many compositions. Stainless steel grades, aluminum alloys, brass compositions, filled plastics, foams, glass types, and engineered panels do not all share one exact density.
Use the exact material specification when the result controls a lift, support, shipment, counterbalance, or structural decision.

A hollow shape is an outer solid minus an inner empty space
Tube weight depends on both diameters, not just outside size
For round tube, calculate the outer cylinder and subtract the inner cylinder. Outside diameter alone describes the envelope, not the amount of metal.
Nominal pipe size is not generally the measured outside diameter. Pipe schedules change wall thickness and inside diameter while a nominal size may keep the same outside diameter. Use actual dimensional data for the exact pipe or tube.
Structural shapes, channels, angles, I beams, extrusions, and complex profiles are usually easier to estimate from a published cross sectional area or manufacturer weight per unit length.
Tube area depends on squared radii. A modest change in wall thickness can create a noticeable weight change over a long piece.
Everyday language and physics use “weight” differently
The calculator reports mass in pounds and kilograms
In science, mass is the amount of matter and the kilogram is its SI unit. Weight is force caused by gravity and is measured in newtons. In commerce and ordinary workshop language, “weight” commonly means the scale reading expressed as pounds or kilograms.
Weight force = mass × gravitational accelerationA part carries essentially the same mass on Earth and the Moon, but its gravitational weight force changes. Your shipping company is not currently offering lunar rates, so the everyday convention remains practical.
Specific gravity is a dimensionless density ratio, usually relative to water for solids and liquids. A specific gravity near 7.85 means the material is about 7.85 times as dense as water under the stated conditions.
1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³. It is approximately 0.03613 lb/in³.


Irregular objects made volume measurement interesting
Balances and water displacement solved weight problems before digital models
Regular blocks can be measured with rulers, but castings, stones, and irregular parts need another route. Immersing a compatible object and measuring displaced liquid reveals its external volume, provided trapped air and absorption are controlled.
The buoyant force described by Archimedes’ principle also allows density to be inferred from measurements in air and in a fluid. The famous crown story is part of later tradition; the physical principle itself is the dependable part.
Fabricators relied on handbooks and supplier tables listing pounds per foot, pounds per square foot, or mass per meter for standard bars, plates, pipes, and shapes. Those tables remain useful because they already include the exact section geometry.
For a complicated extrusion or structural section, published mass per length includes the actual profile and usually avoids several opportunities for geometric error.
The ideal solid is not always the delivered part
Practical corrections and limitations
- Use actual dimensions, not nominal names, when the tolerance matters.
- Subtract holes, pockets, slots, and cavities or use a known net volume.
- Add weld metal, fasteners, inserts, coatings, fluids, and attached hardware.
- Check the exact alloy, grade, resin, filler, moisture condition, or composite construction.
- Remember that temperature changes density and dimensions; the effect is usually small for ordinary solid workshop estimates but can matter in precision work.
- Use supplier mass per length for complex standard profiles when available.
- Verify actual mass before lifting, rigging, shipping, balancing, or structural use.
The calculator assumes ideal geometry and uniform density. Porosity, voids, cast variation, scale, corrosion, coatings, and manufacturing tolerances change the real part.

The part has gained mass without anyone lifting it
The shape is measured, the density is identified, and the forklift request is now based on arithmetic.
