Fastener Hole Reference
How pilot holes, tap holes, clearance holes, and counterbores differ.

Pilot hole
A pilot hole guides a screw and reduces splitting or excessive driving force. The correct size depends on the screw root diameter, material, and whether full thread engagement is needed.
Tap drill
A tap drill leaves material for internal threads. The drill is smaller than the finished major thread diameter. Thread percentage and material affect the preferred size.
Clearance hole
A clearance hole lets the fastener pass through without threading into that part. Close, normal, and loose clearances serve different assembly needs.
Counterbore and countersink
A counterbore has a flat bottom for a cylindrical head. A countersink is angled for a flat head. Match the feature to the actual fastener instead of assuming the head angle or diameter.

Reference values help compare sizes and plan a job. Product specifications, codes, tolerances, and the actual material still control the final choice.

Matching the hole to the job
A single screw can be involved with three or four different hole types on the same joint. The piece being threaded into needs a pilot or tap hole so the fastener can grip. The piece the screw passes through needs a clearance hole so the fastener does not bind against threads it should not engage. If the head needs to sit flush or recessed, a counterbore or countersink finishes the job.
Confusing these is one of the most common assembly mistakes in both wood and metal work, because all four holes can look like "just drill a hole this size" until the fastener does not seat or draw the joint tight the way it should.
Decide what the hole is supposed to do before you decide what size to drill it. The job, not the fastener diameter alone, determines whether you want a tight pilot, a loose clearance, or something in between.
Picking the right one
Choosing the right hole type
If the fastener needs to cut or form its own thread in that material, you want a pilot or tap hole sized to leave the right amount of material for grip. If the fastener needs to pass through freely and thread into a different part, you want a clearance hole with enough gap to avoid binding. If the head needs to sit level with or below the surface, add a counterbore for a flat-bottomed cylindrical head, or a countersink for an angled flat head.
A simple decision order

Tips and common mistakes
- A pilot hole sized for softwood is often too small for hardwood, and can split the piece or snap the fastener. Adjust for the actual material, not a single rule of thumb.
- Clearance holes that are too tight will bind the fastener against the wrong part and prevent the joint from drawing tight, even though the screw turns freely.
- Test the hole and counterbore combination on scrap material before committing to a finished part, especially with an unfamiliar fastener size.
Confirm whether a print calls for a tap drill or a clearance drill before cutting. The two numbers are rarely the same size, and swapping them ruins the joint.
Where these standards came from
A little history
Standardized hole and thread fits grew out of the industrial push for interchangeable parts. Before common tap drill and clearance charts existed, machinists and joiners in different shops often worked to their own local habits, which made swapping parts between shops unreliable. Formal thread and fit standards, developed through the 19th and 20th centuries, gave every shop the same reference so a bolt made in one location would reliably fit a hole drilled in another.
Woodworking pilot hole practice developed more informally, passed shop to shop, which is part of why it still relies more on species-specific judgment than on a single universal chart.
