What this calculator is actually doing
Wood changes dimension mostly across the grain, not along its length. Tangential movement, across the face of a flatsawn board, is generally greater than radial movement in quartersawn stock. The calculator applies a species movement coefficient to width and moisture change.
Movement occurs mainly across the grain. Do not apply the same coefficient to lengthwise movement.

How to do the math yourself
Estimated dimensional change = board width × movement coefficient × change in moisture content. Use the coefficient that matches the grain orientation and species data source.

- Design joinery so wide solid panels can move; do not rigidly trap them across the grain.
- Use expected indoor seasonal moisture content, not outdoor relative humidity directly.
- Measure board orientation carefully; flatsawn and quartersawn material can move differently.
Quarter sawn and flat sawn boards move differently, and the final environment matters more than the shop humidity on assembly day.

What the result does not tell you
This is an estimate based on average coefficients. Actual movement depends on species, grain angle, moisture history, finish, panel construction, local climate, and whether the wood reaches equilibrium.

Frequently asked questions
Does wood move more across or along the grain?
Across the grain by far. Lengthwise movement is usually small enough to ignore in ordinary furniture work.
Does finish stop wood movement?
No. Finish can slow moisture exchange, but it does not permanently stop it.
Why are flatsawn and quartersawn values different?
Wood shrinks and swells differently in the tangential and radial directions of the growth rings.
