What this calculator is actually doing

A tap drill removes enough material for the tap to form or cut the thread while leaving a selected percentage of thread engagement. More engagement is not always stronger; it can sharply increase tapping torque and breakage risk.

Thread percentage is a design choice, not a promise of strength. Hard material, forming taps, and special thread classes may need different recommendations.

How to do the math yourself

For a common approximate 75% thread, metric drill diameter ≈ major diameter − pitch. For inch threads, drill diameter ≈ major diameter − 1 ÷ threads per inch. These are practical approximations, not exact thread geometry.

Worked example

For an M8 × 1.25 thread:Drill ≈ 8.00 − 1.25 = 6.75 mmA nearby standard drill is selected from an appropriate drill chart.Material, tap style, thread class, and desired engagement may change the final choice.

  • Use a published tap drill chart for the exact thread standard, class, material, and tap type before production work.
  • Hard or gummy materials often benefit from less thread engagement than a simple 75% approximation.
  • Use the correct cutting fluid, keep the tap aligned, clear chips as required, and avoid bottoming a tap in a shallow blind hole.

Actual hole size depends on drill runout, material, sharpening, machine rigidity, and whether the hole is through or blind.

How we got here

A little history and background

Standard screw threads developed rapidly during the nineteenth century as interchangeable machinery became essential. Unified inch and ISO metric systems now define geometry, while tap drill tables translate that geometry into practical shop sizes.

What the result does not tell you

The approximation does not account for thread class, minor diameter tolerance, forming taps, tapered pipe threads, special thread forms, plating allowance, material behavior, or manufacturer recommendations.

Is 75% thread always best?

No. Higher engagement can greatly increase torque with little practical strength gain. Material and application determine the appropriate percentage.

Can I use this for a thread forming tap?

Not reliably. Forming taps usually require a larger, tightly controlled hole specified by the tap manufacturer.

Why does my chart list a different drill?

Charts may target a different engagement percentage, thread class, material, or available standard drill size.
