Every conversion is really a comparison
A unit is just the size of one measuring step. A foot is one size of step. A meter is another. A fathom is bigger. If the distance stays the same, the real length does not change, only the number used to describe it.
For modern length units, the converter uses the meter as the middle step. It turns your starting value into meters first, then turns that same distance into the unit you want. Think of the meter as the translator in the middle.
1 meter = 3.28084 feet = 39.37 inches. So a meter is a little longer than 3 feet, or a little longer than a yard.
So when the tool says it converts to meters first, it is not trying to be mysterious. It is simply using one common reference point, then converting from that reference point into inches, feet, chains, nautical miles, cubits, or whatever else you picked.

Converting 100 feet into meters
One modern international foot is exactly 0.3048 meter. That means every foot is a little less than one third of a meter.
To convert 100 feet, multiply by the number of meters in one foot. That gives you the same distance expressed in meters. From there, you can keep going into centimeters or millimeters if you want smaller units.
Worked example
100 ft × 0.3048 = 30.48 m
30.48 m × 100 = 3,048 cm
30.48 m × 1,000 = 30,480 mm
To go backward, divide instead: 30.48 ÷ 0.3048 = 100 ft.
If you want a rough picture in your head, 30.48 meters is about 100 feet, which is a little longer than the length of a regulation basketball court and a lot easier to picture than a floating decimal by itself. Random thought: what do you call a pencil that is the boss? The ruler. Anyway, back to units.
Tiny history detour
Why is a foot called a foot?
Because early measuring systems often borrowed from the human body. Feet, hands, palms, spans, and cubits were easy to use because people always had those with them. Convenient? Yes. Consistent? Not even a little.
A cubit was generally the distance from the elbow to the end of the hand or middle finger. A span was the stretch of the hand. A palm was the width of the hand. Different places and different time periods used slightly different versions, so old measurements often need context before they can be trusted too literally.
Ancient Egyptians used physical cubit rods to keep the measurement more consistent. In other words, people eventually realized that “my arm” and “your arm” were not a great quality-control system.
From fields to survey lines
Rods, chains, and furlongs came from real work
Some older units were tied directly to jobs. A furlong came from the idea of a furrow-long, meaning the length of a plowed furrow. A chain was a real surveying tool. In the traditional English system, one chain is 66 feet, and ten chains make one furlong.
That is why old land records can look strange at first. The units were built around farming, surveying, and property work, not around making life easy for people reading them hundreds of years later.

Fathoms and nautical miles belong to the water
A fathom is 6 feet and became useful for rope, depth, and marine work. The word is tied to the idea of outstretched arms, which makes sense when you imagine someone measuring rope by pulling it across the body.
The modern nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters. That equals about 6,076.1 feet. It is used in marine and air navigation. A knot means one nautical mile per hour, so it is a speed, not a distance.
The nautical mile is tied to Earth geometry and navigation. It was useful long before anyone had a phone calmly telling them to turn right in 500 feet.

The meter is now tied to the speed of light
The meter used to be represented by physical standards, including a carefully protected metal bar. Today it is defined through the fixed speed of light in a vacuum. One meter is the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
You do not need to memorize that to use the converter. The useful part is simply this: modern units like the meter, foot, and inch have exact definitions. That is why modern conversions can be very precise.

Before you trust every decimal
Exact modern unit, approximate historical meaning
Modern feet, inches, meters, and nautical miles have fixed definitions. Many older cubits, leagues, palms, and similar units do not. The converter can give you a useful modern estimate, but it cannot guess which local or historical version a writer meant if the source never says.
When reading an old text, it helps to ask four simple questions: who wrote it, when they wrote it, where they were, and what they were measuring. That is usually enough to tell you whether the number should be treated as exact, approximate, or somewhere in between.
Use exact conversions for defined modern units. Use historical conversions to understand scale and context, and keep the word “approximately” close by when the source is vague.
