Paint is sold by volume, but the project is measured by area
The job is to connect those two measurements without forgetting the second coat, the windows, the roller, or the surface that drinks paint like it has been crossing a desert.

Three areas prevent most estimating mistakes
Gross area, net area, and coated area are different numbers
Gross area is length × height × number of surfaces. Net area subtracts doors, windows, and other unpainted openings. Coated area multiplies the net area by the number of coats.
Coverage ratings are applied to coated area. A 100 square foot wall receiving two coats represents 200 square feet of coating work.
Write down the base area and the coat count separately. Hiding the second coat inside a vague “extra” percentage is how estimates become arguments.

A paint can cover an area without hiding what is underneath
Coverage and opacity describe different problems
Coverage tells you how much area a gallon can spread over at the intended film thickness. Hiding tells you whether the dry film obscures the color and pattern beneath it.
A dramatic color change, low-hiding pigment, porous patch, or uneven primer can require another coat even when the theoretical square-foot calculation says the volume was sufficient.
Spreading paint farther than the label rate may make the gallon “cover” more wall while producing too little film for hiding, durability, or washability.
Rooms are not four identical rectangles unless the room agrees
Perimeter is a fast shortcut for ordinary walls
For a simple room, wall area can be estimated as room perimeter × wall height. Add gable ends, stair walls, closets, soffits, and alcoves separately.
Subtract large unpainted openings when useful. Small windows and doors are sometimes left in the estimate because trim work, cutting in, roller loss, and touchups consume material too.
Ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets, and accent walls often use different products and should be calculated as separate paint systems.


Pigment has always needed something to hold it in place
Paint is a recipe, not merely a color
Historic coatings used mineral and earth pigments with binders such as lime, milk proteins, oils, waxes, gums, and resins. Modern architectural paint usually combines pigment, binder, liquid carrier, and additives.
Waterborne “latex” paint does not normally contain natural rubber latex. The name refers to the polymer particles dispersed in water.
The familiar US gallon contains 128 US fluid ounces. It is a volume unit, while the weight of a gallon varies with the paint formulation.
The wall decides how theoretical coverage behaves
Texture, porosity, and application method change consumption
- Use the technical data sheet for the exact product and substrate.
- Prime repairs, bare material, stains, and porous surfaces as required.
- Allow for roller nap, brush loading, spraying loss, overspray, and material left in tools.
- Mix boxed containers together when batch-to-batch color consistency matters.
- Use lead-safe procedures when disturbing old coatings that may contain lead.
The calculator estimates volume. It does not determine coating compatibility, surface preparation, film thickness, cure, ventilation, or hazardous-material controls.
